Bitumen wird aufgrund des geringen Gehalts an polyzyklischen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen als Bindemittel im Straßenbau eingesetzt. Aus Gesteinskörnungen und Bitumen wird Asphaltmischgut hergestellt, das als Baustoff für die Asphaltschichten des Straßenoberbaus dient. Deutschlands Straßennetz ist Stand 2021 knapp 650.000 km lang. Die Fläche für Siedlung und Verkehr ist die drittgrößte Nutzungsart in Deutschland. Ende 2019 nahm sie 14,4 % der Gesamtfläche in Anspruch. Von 2004-2019 wuchs sie um 12,8 %, um 5.868 qkm.
