Der Marsianer beschreibt eine Robinson-Erzählung auf dem Mars. Ein Astronaut wird für tot gehalten und zurückgelassen. Eine Rettung scheint unerreichbar und sein Kampf ums Überleben beginnt. Im Laufe der Handlung reist der Protagonist für die Satelliten sichtbar über den Planeten. Währenddessen morst er Botschaften mit Steinen in den Sand. Auf dem Umschlag steht der Titel des Romans, ergänzt durch Morsecode auf einem Bild der Marsoberfläche. Die Schrift ist aus Klebefolie geschnitten und hebt sich fühlbar ab. Auf der Rückseite steht an gleicher Position ein gemorstes Zitat aus dem Text: Mache mir einen Plan. Der Rücken des Buchs ist in Anlehnung an den Inhalt des Romans aus Gewebeklebeband hergestellt. In der Gestaltung wurden die viele unterschiedlichen Textebenen der Erzählung aufgegriffen. Es gibt das Logbuch des Astronauten, die Berichte des auktorialen Erzählers von Raumschiff und Erde, Chats, Briefe, Berichte und Artikel. Diese finden ihre eigene Position im Satzspiegel.

The Martian describes a Robinson narrative on Mars. An astronaut is presumed dead and left behind. Rescue seems unattainable and his struggle for survival begins. As the plot unfolds, the protagonist travels across the planet, visible to satellites. Meanwhile, he writes messages in Morse into the sand with stones. On the cover, the title of the novel is supplemented by Morse code on a picture of the surface of Mars. The writing is cut from foil and stands out perceptibly. On the back, in the same position, is a Morse code quote from the text: Making a plan. The spine of the book is made of tape in reference to the content of the novel. In the design, the many different text levels of the narrative have been taken up. There is the astronaut's log, the auctorial narrator's reports from the spaceship and Earth, chats, letters, reports and articles. These find their own position in the type area.
