Gastfreundschaft ist, bei all ihrer Generosität, ein komplexes Konzept. Häufig auf Geselligkeit oder Gegenseitigkeit reduziert, scheint sie zunächst grundsätzlich positiv konnotiert. Auf der Suche nach einer räumlichen Gestalt von Gastfreundschaft untersucht Denker die Potenziale des Gastgebens und ihre Relevanz für das Kuratorische. Dabei bilden populäre Elemente einer auf Hospitalität beruhenden Situation die Grundlage der Auseinandersetzung: der Tisch, die Gabe und die Einladung. Anstatt die gängige Präsentationsform von Ausstellungen in den Vordergrund zu stellen, geht Be my guest – or would you like to be the host? vielmehr situativ der Frage nach, welche Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten es braucht, um Gastgeben zu können. Die Zusammenarbeit in diesem Prozess ist von zentraler Bedeutung und erweitert das Gefühl einer Dringlichkeit, in der Rollen von Gastgeber*innen und Gäst*innen, Formen der kulturellen Produktion und des Zusammentreffens neu überdacht und ausgehandelt werden.

Hospitality, for all its generosity, is a complex concept. Often reduced to sociability or reciprocity, it initially seems to have fundamentally positive connotations. In search of a spatial form of hospitality, Denker examines the potential of hospitality and its relevance for the curatorial. In doing so, popular elements of a situation based on hospitality form the basis of the argument: the table, the gift, and the invitation. Rather than emphasizing the common form of exhibition making, Be my guest – or would you like to be the host? takes a situational approach to the question of what conditions and possibilities it takes to be able to host. Collaboration in this process is crucial and expands the sense of urgency in which roles of hosts and guests, forms of cultural production, and encounters are rethought and renegotiated.
